The Importance of Showing Appreciation for Your Employees

All organizations want employees who are actively engaged and interested in working toward the larger organization goals. But while organizations might expect all of their employees to have this drive, they don’t always hold up their end of the bargain. In the spirit of November and Thanksgiving, we’re asking something related to your corporate well-being: how do you show employees that they matter?

Employee Appreciation Matters

Why is it important to show employees that they matter? Cutting Edge PR lays it out in simple terms: “Appreciation is a fundamental human need.”

When an organization takes the time to recognize employee efforts, it validates what they’ve done as well as shows others that this is the desired behavior. It’s the principle of social proof; as Professor Robert Cialdini explains, “We view a behavior as correct in a given situation to the degree that we see others performing it.” It’s the pat on the back that makes us feel good.

For organizations to create an effective employee recognition program, it must have two parts:

  1.  Ability to see and recognize outstanding employee effort.
  2.  Doing something in recognition of that outstanding effort.

It may sound easy, but these can be more complicated than they seem at first. Some organizations rely on fellow employees to call out good effort and behavior when they see it; others might rely on managers to keep a watch on their employees. It’s important that the recognition comes in a timely manner to make the reward not only relevant, but the behavior fresh. If someone thanks you or congratulates you on something that happened weeks or even months ago, it feels more insignificant.

In addition to these two facets of recognition, don’t forget the important role that communication plays in both. Recognition should be like a game of telephone (in a good way); it filters from the individual to the team and outward. Utilizing formal communication channels – all employee meetings, emails, etc – adds more legitimacy to the recognition.

Using Benovate can create another significant communication channel through custom announcements that can go out to specific teams or the whole company.

Keep Employee Well-being at the Forefront

If all of this isn’t enough to show thanks for your employees, there’s a positive cost-benefit analysis that might persuade organizations. From increased productivity, improved employee satisfaction, or enhanced teamwork, the benefits are many while the costs are relatively low.

Overall, employee satisfaction can be traced in part to employee recognition. This November, let employees know they’re important to your business.
