Encouraging a Healthy Work-Life Balance for Employees.
Work life balance. Organizations know it’s important and contributes to a healthy workforce. But when it comes to implementing, and encouraging employees to find that balance, things aren’t quite so black and white.
For example, over half of Americans (54% according to MarketWatch) only take half of their yearly allotted vacation days. The top reasons for not taking time off? Fear of getting behind on work, a belief that no one else can do the work they do, dedication to the organization, and desire (obligation?) to maintain a connection to work.

But here’s an interesting point: 80% said they would take the time off if they felt fully supported and encouraged by their boss to do so. This means that it’s just as important for the company and management to encourage taking part in these opportunities as it is to offer them in the first place.
True work life balance has to be part of an organization’s culture. But how do you encourage employee to take advantage of the different benefits you offer, even beyond paid time off? 4 Ways to Encourage Work Life Balance:
1. Promote Health Incentives
After a stressful day, coupled with a long commute, it’s hard to then gather up the strength to go work out or throw together a healthy meal in lieu of easy, fast food. Finding ways to help employees maintain healthy lifestyles is a great benefit to offer. Whether your office is interested in hosting fitness classes onsite, discounts to nearby gyms, or sponsors a company sports team. Finding ways to help employees increase their health has many rewards beyond work life balance.
2. Allow for Flextime
Flexible work hours is an easy win for most organizations to encourage work-life balance. Generally, organizations have a set number of hours an employee must work (i.e. 40), but the employee can choose how to spend that. They might work four ten hour days for three day weekends, or need to duck out an hour early one day and make it up the next. We all have exciting lives outside of our work (well, hopefully we do); flextime allows employees to indulge their passions without feeling the grind too hard.
3. Consider Telecommunication
Telecommuting gets a bad reputation sometimes, but the numbers don’t lie. Studies show that workers are 13% more productive when they work from home vs. the office. Taking out the distractions of a day, commute times, and more allows them to focus more fully in a comfortable environment. It also gives them time to modify their schedule to address personal needs without hassle.
4. Find Time for Passionate Projects
Google has something called the 20% program. It’s an initiative that allows their developers to spend up to 20% of their time on creative side projects. The benefits? It allows employees to engage with their creativity and not feel like a cog in a machine, and show the company a different skill set.
Lead By Example
Most importantly, organizational leaders need to lead by example. Just providing workplace benefits like these isn’t enough to get employees to engage. If they see the boss working from 8am to 8pm every day, answering emails on weekends, and so on, it sets an unstated expectation. No matter how many emails are sent from HR encouraging behavior that is more balanced.
Sometimes it’s a fine line to walk and balance getting work done with flexibility, so you may have to try a few different approaches to see what makes the biggest impact within your organization. Once you find that balance, you’ll have a happier, healthier, and more productive workforce.
