Why Self-Reflecting is Key to Growing Personally & Professionally.
How was your year? In the final month of 2018, it’s time to look back and reflect on how things are going. We often spend time busy and overwhelmed for the wrong reasons, so remember, don’t mistake activity for productivity. Activity keeps you busy, while productivity helps you achieve a goal. The most crucial ingredient of productivity is self-reflection. According to Jennifer Porter of the Harvard Business Review, “The most useful reflection involves the conscious consideration and analysis of beliefs and actions for the purpose of learning.” Doing this will lead to personal, professional, and career growth.
Taking the time to consider your values and goals will help you practice restraint, thoughtfulness, and self-knowledge. Those qualities will certainly aid you in the workforce, but they will do the same for your relationships – with others and with yourself. What changes do you want to make to your exercise habits? If you’ve been growing apart from someone you love, what can you do to strengthen your ties? Have you been behind at work? Or putting in too much time there? How can you build healthy boundaries between work and home? All of these questions and more are part of self-reflection, so take a few minutes each day to contemplate these answers.
There are two main parts of an effective self-reflection process.
The first is setting priorities, which allows you to allocate time to work toward your goals. If you’re searching for personal growth, choose which aspects of your personal life to give the most attention to. If after reflecting you decide that a clean home and daily communication with family are your top priorities, you know exactly what to work on. If you realize that you’ve been longing to learn how to use a new type of software that will help you with your work, you know what kind of tutorials to review for your professional growth. If you find that you’ve been feeling bored at work, collaborate with your supervisor or a coworker to plan a new project or a new path for career growth.
The second is taking action to achieve what you outlined. In order to grow, you have to follow through. This is where productivity really comes to life. Sometimes the course of action will be clear, like reading an extra book each month. Sometimes it’ll be more difficult, like working on a relationship or getting a promotion at work. When you do encounter obstacles, your self-reflecting skills will help you overcome them. What is getting in the way? Did you take on too much at once? Do you lack the resources to do it alone, or would you benefit from someone to brainstorm with? Start small and don’t be afraid to ask for help.
Take the time now and reflect. How was your 2018? What do you want 2019 to look like? What steps will you take to make it happen? If you answer these questions and start planning now, you’ll be on the way to a year of growth—personally and professionally.
