4 Ways to Have Fun and Stay Active as the Temps Drop

At the Benovate office,  in Minnesota, winter is no joke. From freezing temperatures to stacks of snow, it definitely takes a hardy constitution to continue to find the light in the dark winter months. But, like we showed football fans across the country at the 2018 Super Bowl, low temps and a little frozen water is no reason to stay inside.

Wherever you might live, don’t let the cold become your excuse for hibernating through the winter. Getting warm and cozy is fine when you need it, but remember that your body will thank you for getting out and getting active. Here are some of our favorite tips for making the most of the winter months.

Ideas for Staying Active Through Winter:

Make it Fun

Make a point to enjoy the season, and maybe find a new favorite hobby. Ice skating, sledding, snowshoeing, and skiing, are some of the many options out there. Best of all, if you aren’t sure you want to invest in the gear for these things, there are a lot of places that will rent out the equipment.

Invest in Staying Warm

It’s hard to have fun when you’re freezing. Learn to layer up if you’re going to be outside for extended periods of time. Pick up some wicking materials to layer close to the skin, and something wind and water resistant for the top layer. And don’t forget your toes and fingers – thick socks, good boots, and appropriate gloves or mittens are a must.

Even if you feel like you’re getting too warm, try to avoid any temptation to remove layers too quickly. Give your body time to adjust (unless you’re wet!).

Stay Hydrated

Drinking enough water is easy in the summer and hotter months – we’re thirsty, so it makes sense to drink, right? In winter months, we don’t get those same cues, and it’s easy to fall behind in water consumption. Staying hydrated is key to keeping your stamina and activity levels up. If cold water just doesn’t appeal when it’s cold out, try out some warm remedies. Herbal teas, hot lemon water, and other options can warm from the inside (while keeping your body healthy).

Hydration is KEY!

Water, herbal teas, hot lemon water and other warm remedies, are key when trying to keep your stamina and activity levels up through-out the colder month.

Connect Locally

Check out some local community centers to see what classes are offered. Winter can be the perfect time to sign up for an indoor league, like basketball or volleyball, or to make yoga and spin class part of your regular routine. If cost is an issue, check to see if any organizations offer fee reductions, since many often do.

If you’re looking for something totally free, visit your local mall and take some time just to walk around (mall walking is serious business). If you’re afraid of crowds, malls will often open their doors for walking before stores even, so check the hours in your area. Many libraries are also good spots to connect with local classes or other programs.

Look for Other Opportunities to Move More!

Staying active in winter months doesn’t have to mean a huge change to your lifestyle, either. Consider little things, like taking the stairs instead of the elevator, doing a few exercises while watching TV, or walking short distances that you might usually drive. Small things add up over time, and any little bit helps.
